AbstractGrazing, agriculture and prescribed burning are economic development activities that generate an impact on natural resources; this is manifested by deforestation and environment’s pollution. This situation is reflected by a variation on vegetation surfaces over time, and an evaluation of these changes can determinate the total damage. The objective of this study was to quantify the increase of the area covered by bushes on the south perimeter of Natural Protected Area (NPA) Sierra de Lobos (Wolves Woodland). The evaluation of change on the surface covered by bushes was made through a comparison of images of 1974 and 2007. Maps were made with the Arc Map 9.2® software. Results show an increase from 24.99% to 53.84% of land area covered by this type of vegetation in the period 1974 to 2007. It was observed that the surface used for agriculture decreased 15.77 %; the grasslands and oaks forest also decreased 6 and 2.5 % respectively. These decreases have resulted in the bush establishment as secondary vegetation. The increase on the surface covered with bushes, has limited other vegetative populations as oak forest and grasslands, and agricultural areas; we understand that part of this problem was caused by the opening and subsequent abandonment of lands used for agriculture. Keywords: Land use, vegetation on semiarid lands, plant populations, abandoned agricultural land.
