AbstractVivipary or pregermination in pecan causes the loss of up to 40% in cv Wichita and 25% in cv Western in Northwestern Mexico and Arizona. An hypothesis suggests that gibberellins and abscisic acid regulate vivipary and entry into dormancy in seeds of corn and if the balance favors the gibberellins, then the seeds germinate on the plant. The experiments were carried out in the years 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010 in orchards from La Costa de Hermosillo, Sonora. Gibberellic acid was foliar sprayed at concentrations of 360 and 720 ppm between the state of gel and nut filling. Premature germination ranged from from 3.7 to 46%, depending on the treatment and harvest date, where the latter was the most important factor. In three of the four years of evaluation, there was a significant increase in premature germination with GA3 treatment, especially in late harvests (p<0.05), while in the four years there was a delay in opening of husk. GA3 concentration in the embryo axis of the nuts at the time of harvest varied from 14 to 19 ppm and was similar among the treatments, indicating that vivipary was not induced by an increase of this hormone in these organs, but by the delay in opening of the husk, which might delay the dehydration of nuts, a process that is needed by this fruit to enter into dormancy. Keywords: vivipary, Sonora Desert, opening of the husk, dormancy.
