AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a silvopastoral system in degraded areas with mesquite trees (Prosopis spp.) associated with buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) and chamiso (Atriplex canescens). During 2010, on the grounds of the Municipality of Las Animas, Aldama, Chihuahua, were evaluated characteristics of natural population of mesquite, forage production and survival of buffel grass in a plantation chamiso, drawn in contour strips. Population densities were low with an average of 85 trees per hectare. There were highly significant differences (P<0.01). Grass production in upstream and downstream of the board was (0.19 kg m-2) and (0.09 kg m-2) respectively. The chamiso was a survival of 65.4% in the evaluation 60 days after planting and 63.9% in the count made 150 days thereafter. The establishment of water catchment systems increased buffel grass productivity in the first year of evaluation of the silvopastoral system. The feasibility and productivity of rangelands through the application of this technology will be evaluated for several consecutive years to establish the performance of forage yield in grass and chamiso, as well as the profits of the mesquite with works of soil and water conservation. Keywords: Prosopis, silvopastoral system, buffel grass, chamizo.
