AbstractTrees and shrubs are inherent components of any plant community, either tropical, desert, polar or temperate. Its dense biomass acts as a regulator of many physical environmental factors as well as being a source of food and shelter for thousands of heterotrophic organisms. For man, the forests formed by trees represent essential economic, social and cultural values. The state of Chihuahua has a wide variety of trees and shrubs covering desert, temperate and tropical areas. The aim of this study was to inventory the species of trees and shrubs in the temperate areas of the state of Chihuahua. The study was conducted throughout the state, in which, eleven observation sites were established and toured in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Each site was visited at least once to obtain the following data: species of trees or shrubs with temperate characteristics, plant association, geographic coordinates (lat/ long) and elevation (meters). After analyzing the data, a list of trees and shrubs comprising 27 families, 57 genera and 163 species was obtained. The dominating families were Fagaceae (33 species and 6 hybrids), Pinaceae (19 and 2 varieties), Rosaceae (10), Ericaceae (10) and Cupressaceae (8). Similarly, it was obtained a list of 11 species of the region that are listed in NOM-059-SEMANART 2010 and 7 species considered threatened, included in the Red List of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). The temperate plant communities of Chihuahua are dominated by two groups of plants (oaks and pines) whose biomass, overall, have a great influence on the physical environment and modify the effects of factors such as temperature, water and soil and thus maintaining the mesic conditions in the temperate region of the State. Keywords: temperate forest of Chihuahua, trees and shrubs, pines and oaks of Chihuahua, floristic list.
