Abstract

The evaluation of infrastructure has been of relevant interest for many countries. Maintenance and construction are an important part of the G.D.P. Five decades ago, it have been issued methods and techniques for the evaluation of on-site concrete structures. They are characterized relatively as of complex operation, high cost and long-time obtaining of results. Based on the above comments, the surface fracture method (Method and elements with patent rights reserved) is a proposed technique for the estimation of concrete strength considering an easier operation, lower operation cost and quick obtaining of results. The technique determinates a maximum torque to achieve a failure in a crossed-slots arrangement made on the surface of the element, thus relating the torque with the concrete strength. The objective of this study was to perform an evaluation of the proposed technique by means of the torque determination and the concrete strength in standardized form with concretes of different strengths and three types of aggregate. The results of this study show that it is possible to obtain quick results and similar coefficients of variation when compared with some existing methods as well as a high correlation between the compressive strength and torque for the tested concretes. The proposed technique can be of potential use in the concrete strength estimation considering the simplicity of operation, lower cost and quick obtaining of results.
