Abstract

Determination of the total antioxidant system (SAT by its abbreviations in Spanish) in capillary blood can be a reliable, practical and minimally invasive option regarding its measurement in venous blood, and represents an advantage in the study of this parameter by its recent clinical, nutritional and sporting interest due its relevance in the immune system. In order to establish the correlation of SAT measurement of capillary blood with respect to its determination in venous blood, a correlational cross-sectional study in 12 clinically healthy adults was conducted. Under eight-hour fasting conditions, blood samples from the antecubital vein and one of the fingertips of each participant were simultaneously extracted. The SAT from plasma was analyzed by testing the antioxidant capacity equivalents of Trolox (TEAC as its acronym in English), adjusted for protein concentration calculated using bicinchoninic acid technique. A statistical analysis with a linear regression model with a Bland and Altman scheme in which a high degree of concordance between both blood collection methods was found (r=0.91, a=0, b=0.967). It was concluded that SAT determination in capillary plasma is a viable alternative with a good degree of association and consistency, compared with venous plasma determination.
